What Is Business Internet Usage?

For both small and large businesses today having a business internet usage policy in place is extremely important. We all know just how useful the internet can be at times, but unfortunately it can also cause a lot of problems for many businesses today. Certainly those members of staff who are surfing the net rather than working will end up causing a lot of productivity time to be lost which results in less profits being made by the business.

By having an internet usage policy in place a company is not only protecting itself and its business but also its employees as well. Below we provide you with some basic steps that you will need to take in order to get the policy in place and ensure that certain issues are addressed as follows:-

1. Firstly you need to make a decision on whether the employees within the company are allowed to browse the web for business purposes only or they can also use it for their own personal use.

2. You need to then make a decision that if you are allowing your staff to browse the internet for personal use at what times of the day they will have access to it. Most companies today who allow their employees to surf the web for personal use normally allow access during lunch hours and after hours only.

3. You also need to take into consideration how the company will monitor each person's use of the internet. Plus you will need to make a decision on just how much privacy the employees are entitled to when they are using the internet.

4. In the policy the company should clearly spell out what is unacceptable behavior in relation to business internet usage. For many companies they will see such subjects that are listed below as being unacceptable.

a. Downloading of content which is deemed to be offensive. b. Producing or downloading information which is considered to be of a threatening or violet nature. c. Any activity which is considered to be illegal. d. Making any kind of commercial solicitation and which does not relate to the business they are involved in.

Once the policy for business internet usage has been agreed upon by all parties concerned then 2 copies should be produced for all employees within the company. One copy which the employee shall retain and the other which they need to sign and then return to the person who has been placed in charge of administrating the policy.
