Control Childrens Internet Usage

Many children today have been provided with their own computers for their own personal use. However this then leaves the parents with a dilemma as to how they are going to be able to control internet usage on their child's computer. Below we provide some tips which should help parents devise a plan which can help them to have more control over their child's use of the internet.

1. Always spend time with your child talking to them about what they are doing and who they happen to be chatting with online. It is also important that you tell them what you consider to be suitable when chatting online, such as talking to their friends or people who they have met.

2. Although many children will have their computer in their rooms. Unfortunately this can cause isolation and result in them doing things online that they should not be doing. Instead locating in say the family room where you readily have access to see what they are doing.

3. Install monitoring software. This is one of the great ways of not only seeing just how much time they are spending on the internet but it can also provide you with a way of reviewing what they have been viewing whilst they have been online. Although it will not provide you with reports relating to every email or instant message that they have sent it will still show you whether they are using the internet sensibly or not.

4. Content Control Software also commonly referred to as censor ware or web filtering software will allow a parent to control what content on the internet a child is actually able to gain access to. It allows you as the parent to determine just what sites and what content on particular sites a child can have access to when using their own PC.

Certainly when it comes to being able to control what children are able to view on the internet a lot of the IT industry major players are putting the onus on the parents to be in control and assess what they feel is suitable for their children. No doubt many parents will raise the question that these people should also be aware of what is considered to be appropriate and inappropriate material to be available on the internet not just where children are concerned but also where adults are as well. Today it is quite easy for any child to key in a few specific works into such search engines as Google and they will be provided with a wealth of information on a whole host of subjects that are deemed to be unsuitable.

However by using the tips provided above a parent will be able to much more effectively control internet usage when their child goes online.
