Implementation Of Employee Internet Usage Policies

As the use of the internet as a tool for effectively communicating over long distances becomes a standard part of business so the creating and implementation of employee internet usage policies have now become part of business life.

These policies are specifically designed to ensure that all employees will not be using the internet inappropriately whilst at work. Certainly in some businesses where such policies have not been implemented many hours of productivity can be lost because of employees surfing the net for their own personal interest rather than working. Below are some guidelines that companiess should follow when setting up an internet usage policy for their employees.

1. Does your business need the internet?

Unfortunately the answer for many businesses today if they wish to thrive is that they do need the internet. But as well as looking at the business as a whole you should also be looking at the requirements for every member of staff that you employ. You may well discover that there are certain members of staff within the company who do not actually need access to the internet. Therefore as part of your policy you could state that only those that need access to the internet should be provided with it. By doing this you may well find that you are actually able to limit the number of problems that would often be associated with allowing all members of your staff to have free access to the internet.

2. Setting up of Appropriate Guidelines

This is an extremely important part of creating an internet usage policy for your business and your employees. It is through these guidelines that you can dictate to your employees what you consider to be appropriate or inappropriate internet usage. If for say example you allow your employees to be able to access the internet at all times then within the guidelines you could state that those found looking at adult or offensive material on their computer will be severely dealt with. By having such a guideline in place will make any employee think twice before they are likely to visit such sites.

However when it comes to actually enforcing any type of employee internet usage policy can be very difficult. A business will need to have in place some kind of software which is able to monitor and track what their employees are doing whilst on the internet. There are many programs available and your IT manager should be able to suggest the one that is most suitable for your business needs. Many of these programs not only monitor and track your employee's internet usage but will provide a warning if they have gained access to any sites which the company deems to be inappropriate. However if you do install such software all employees should be made aware of this through the internet usage policy.
