Global Internet Usage

The Increase Of Global Internet Usage

According to figures provided by Internet World Stats as of March 2007 about 1,114,274,426 people are now using the internet worldwide. Certainly since its inception global internet usage is increasing. Below we will take a look more closely at some facts relating to global use of the internet today.

Currently the most commonly used language on the internet is English, whilst the second most commonly used language on the internet today is Chinese. Presently there are around 322 million people who native language is English whilst another 200 million use English as a second language. However as more and more of the Chinese population begin to come online then this is certainly going to begin to impact on what will be the most commonly used language on the internet in the future.

Although the average amount of time a person will spend on the internet globally stands at just over 11 hours each month. However in the USA Americans will spend twice as much time on the internet compared to any other person in the world. Currently Americans are spending over 74 hours a month online whilst at work and then a further 25 hours online whilst at home.

Because the number of people using the internet globally has increased then this has meant that the amount of bandwidth now being consumed has also gone up. The reason why bandwidth has been increasing in recent months and years is because people are using more peer to peer networks in order that they gain access to video files since the introduction of such sites as YouTube.

Certainly the introduction of such sites as YouTube has resulted in a rise of more than 10% internet usage by people aged 15 or over. In fact since January 2006 up until January 2007 almost 750 million people aged 15 or over have been using the internet around the world. Whilst the main countries which have seen the heaviest growth in relation to internet usage have been India, China and the Russian Federation. In India there was a growth of 33% in 2006, whilst China saw the number of internet uses grow by 20% in 2006 and the Russian Federation saw the use of the internet grow by 21%.

When it comes to looking at total global internet usage statistics it has been found that China now makes up the second largest internet population just behind the US. Currently they have 86.8 million (11.7%) people using the internet and this is only a very small proportion of the total population of the currently. What is also important to note that currently the USA only makes up 20% of the total internet usage globally, the other 80% is made up from users in Asia, Europe and the Russian Federation.
